SHOWS AND ENTERTAINMENT
By DanceInTimeProductions

Below are more show descriptions...

Shows at the "Free Library of Philadelphia"

On October 17, 2004, DanceInTimeProductions arranged a unique hour-long show which included members of five different Rueda groups. The groups came from NY, NJ, PA, and MD In addition, Latin dances such as Merengue, Bachata, and Cha Cha, were performed and explained briefly. Click here to see a video clip of this show.  In April of 2010, another show was produced for this library!

Swing and Latin Show at the Washington, DC Convention Center

DIT put together a swing and salsa show for the Washington, DC Convention Center.  We began with demonstrations of seven different Latin and swing  dances: Salsa, Rumba, Cha Cha, Merengue, Single Swing, Triple Swing, and West Coast Swing.  During each dance, a voice-over described the history and provided some general information about that dance. These voice-overs are original summaries of how dance developed in this country and others, including how one dance evolved into another. We followed that with dazzling Latin and swing performances.  This was entertainment provided for the annual Car Show in DC.

First Night Annapolis

This spectacular New Year's Eve celebration down by the dock was boasted to be the largest entertainment event every year in the state of Maryland.   DanceInTimeProductions ran the "Latin Quarter" which was a great hit, brought back every year until FirstNight went out of existence. We did shows, taught lessons, and held dance contests.  Click below to see clips:

National Zoo's Hispanic Festival / Mexican Cultural Institute

DIT performed a number of times at the Hispanic Heritage Festival at the National Zoo. Casino Rueda groups from Virginia, Washington, Baltimore, and New York were invited to join in this Latin Dance performance. We entertained for three hours, demonstrating many Latin dances from Bachata to Rumba. There were large Ruedas, performance choreographies, and instruction in basic Salsa.

A show was also produced for the Mexican Cultural Institute, which is the cultural arm of the Mexican Embassy in Washington, DC.  Performances included Salsa, Casino Rueda, Rumba, Merengue, Cha Cha, and Danzon (the precursor dance to Salsa). (Interestingly, "Cha Cha" is called "Cha Cha Cha" in Mexico!)  Telemundo, a Spanish television station, filmed this event and interviewed Barb and others for a segment that subsequently aired on TV!  Click here to see video clips:

Woodrow Wilson Plaza Show

On August 3, 2005, a Latin Dance show was provided for the Woodrow Wilson Plaza in the heart of Washington D.C.  This included some members of Dance In Time along with some of the members of the American Dance Montage (Michele Kearney, Susan Cox, Fabio Bonini and Doug Reynolds).

Mr. Frank Regan, a ballroom champion with countless honors to his name and Director of the American Dance Montage, was kind enough to allow his beautiful Mambo, Bolero, and Swing choreographies to be used in this show.  These routines are complete with colorful costumes that match the era when the dance became popular.  We also performed some club Latin dances. Click here to see videos of this show!

Hispanic Heritage Month and Cinco de Mayo Celebrations in the Private Sector, at Churches, & Government Offices.

For years, during Hispanic Heritage Month (which runs from mid-September to mid-October), DanceInTime has produced many lunch-time or afternoon shows for various government offices and branches of the service including army bases like Fort Meade, the Army's Test and Evaluation Office, the Army Research Lab, Walter Reed Medical Center, and the National Defense University, Government Accountability Office, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, Environmental Protection Agency, Customs and Border Patrol Division, etc. We have also performed at non government offices such as the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and others.

DanceInTime has also done many shows for Cinco de Mayo parties and festivals as well.  Video clips of these shows are on this website.

Wellness Festivals

The Maryland Department of Health and Human Hygiene had the kick-off event for a Wellness Fair that featured Latin Dance instruction and performances.  Click below to see dance demonstrations by Barb and Glen at this event.  And DIT has performed and taught at several other Health Fairs in the area, too.

World Dance Festival/DanceDCFestival

A big weekend dance event was sponsored by the Maryland Community College system. It included shows, workshops, and dance demonstrations of all sorts. The presentations below were done to represent an array of ballroom dances for this event.

The DanceDCFestival (which is sponsored by the D.C. Commission on Arts and Humanities) is themed similarly to the World Dance Festival. Both focus on dance styles from all over the world and present a dazzling display of varied dances.  DIT performed at the DanceDCFestival from 2006 through 2009.  Some clips from those shows are on the "Videos" page of this site.

Sampling of Some Other Shows

Barb judged some of the competitions at an U.S. National Dance Championships event, ran Cuban Salsa (Rueda) workshops, and her group performed.  One year, the Saturday night Gala for this event consisted of simulations of famous movie scenes featuring dance.  So  for example, a hustle dancer teacher did a dance scene from Saturday Night Fever, etc.  Barb Bernstein put together a simulation of the nightclub scene from Dance With Me that features a Rueda circle.  It was a wonderful show!  We danced to the same music as in the movie's nightclub scene and used many of the same steps!

A couple of times, Barb and Glen did a Salsa demonstration and taught at Bowie State University. We've performed at weddings and taught at wedding showers. In one case, we taught the ladies at a shower a short routine. Then those who were comfortable were going to perform it at the wedding reception!

A number of additional Latin dance shows have been arranged at other venues including: The Strathmore Music Center at a private Christmas party, church events, Taste of Bethesda, Hispanic Heritage Programs (both for offices and organizations such as churches, the "Celebrate Fairfax" Festival), the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington, DC, Artscape in Baltimore, etc.   DIT also participated one year in the Publick Playhouse's Annual World Dance Showcase.

We had another interesting gig that was a cross between a performance and a speaking engagement.  The Charles Theater in Baltimore has a program on Sundays where they show a movie, offer brunch, and hire a guest speaker who is an expert in the subject of the movie to lead a discussion afterwards.  One Sunday, they showed a "pre-release" of Shall We Dance? starring Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere, and hired Barb as the guest speaker.  This is a great movie that brings up many interesting issues regarding dance culture.   Click here to read an article about this event which includes a movie review.

Vocal Entertainment

Although this website is mostly about dancing, I wanted to add info about the excellent vocal entertainment of Kevin Muldrow and Gary Richman who sing "Oldies" (but definitely "Goodies")

If anyone is looking to hire a singer to entertain at a party or event, I heartily suggest them. Kevin imitates Nat King Cole and does an incredible likeness and Gary imitates Sinatra! If you want to reach them, you can do so through their website, or just email me and I'll pass the message along.

To discuss entertainment and/or instruction for an event, feel free to contact Barbara Bernstein, Director of DanceInTimeProductions.   We're always happy to construct a program tailored to your needs.  Shows or dance lessons can be arranged for the Washington, D.C. area or out of town.
