Hola from DanceInTime!

BELOW ARE SOME SUMMER SCHEDULE NOTES:

If you are already a Salsa dancer and want to take your dancing to the next level, learning the Cuban-style (Casino Rueda) Salsa steps that are used in Rueda circles is an amazingly fast and easy way to skyrocket your "vocabulary of moves!"

Regular Class Schedule:

1. Cuban style (also called Casino style or Rueda) Salsa is taught
Saturdays from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at Crown Dance; 2820 Dorr Ave.; Fairfax, VA 22031.  Note that this is in the Merrifield area of VA, very close to the Dunn Loring metro, and also close to the Washington Beltway (495).  (Note that on 8/16, there is a lot going on including the DC Salsa Congress so we'll end class a little early at 1:30 pm.)

2. Cuban style Salsa is taught Sundays from 5 PM to 7:00 PM at the Avalon Studio; 15 Mellor Ave; Catonsville, Maryland.

Also, note that we have a two class cancellations in August.  On Sunday, August 17 and Sun. August 31, there is NO Sunday class.  (The Danceintime Ladies' Team will perform at the Washington DC Salsa Congress on 8/17, and 8/31 is the day before Labor Day.)  However we ARE holding class the Saturdays of those weekends--8/16 and 8/30.

5.  There is a Class & Party on Sept 12 and Sept 19 (two Fridays) at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the U. of MD campus.  It runs from 7:30 to 10 pm.  This special class and party costs $15/person each Friday.  It will be held in the Prince Georges County Suite/Community room run that's used by Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission (MNCPPC). This room (# 2523) is hard to find, but it's just inside the  Clarice Smith side entrance that is opposite the parking garage for Byrd Stadium. (It's the same entrance that is used by the Music Dept.) See the "Directions" page on this website to get to the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. For more info on the class/party, go to: www.pgparks.com. You can register online, that night, or by going into any community center in PG County.

Who is Anna?  Here is a short biography:
She is a professional Salsa, Hip Hop, Ballroom and Latin dance Master Instructor.  Anna began dance training early in her childhood with jazz and hip hop, and later added ballroom training. She's trained with some of the world's top dance coaches. Anna was the Dance Director at a studio in Chicago for 8 years and has had students win top honors in dance competitions. She ran a team that won 2005 National Latin Formation Team Championships and is recognized as an innovative choreographer, bringing teams she trained to many Salsa Congresses. She has also appeared on a number of TV shows. As a former high school teacher, she has the great combination of experience with instruction and talent for working with dancers at all levels.

2.  Going Out

There is a Baltimore Salsa Meetup which visits all the local venues to dance. If you aren't already a member, you can sign up free by going to salsa.meetup.com/163 and following the prompts. And we need people to be hosts for meetup events.  So if you would like to do that, let me know (barbBtalks@aol.com). You can check out the many other dance meetups in the area as well! Check out Salsa.meetup.com/163 for the details on upcoming events!

3. Auditions/Performing

Danceintime is expanding some of their teams and interested dancers can contact Barb about auditions (301-9806043).  We have both pro and student teams and they're lots of fun!  We've got a new group forming that will do club Latin dances, not necessarily Rueda and that is open to dancers who are intermediate/adv.  So if you're a strong dancer and this interests you, please contact me!  We're starting to prepare for a September show!

4.  Summer Salsa Congresses

a. DIT performed over the July 4th weekend at the Philadelphia Salsa Congress. (The Rueda/Cha Cha routine we did was repeated at Zanzibar's on July 10, at their special "Performers' Recognition Night.")  In addition, Barb and Athena, a Rueda teacher from Philly, taught a basic level Rueda workshop together which was a lot of fun.  Athena teaches Rueda, Latin dance and many other dance forms at her Philadelphia Studio, Salsita Dance Studio.  Check it out if you are visiting that city--it's right in the heart of town.

b. The PR Salsa Congress was held late in July and the Danceintime team did a great job performing on Friday, 7/25.  Again, some video will be on the site soon.  Barb also taught a workshop there (covering sententa nuevo, L.A. de Glen, and a few other moves) along with Anna and Teresa.  (Thanks, guys!)

c. The DC Congress is held from August 15 to 17 and the site is: www.capitalcongress.com. DIT is performing on the Sunday, 8/17.  There is a lot going on at the Congress the entire weekend if you want to check it out!

d. The site for the NYC Congress is: http://www.nycsalsacongress.com/ and that event is from August 27 to 31. Again, DIT is performing on the Sunday, which is 8/31.  The guy in charge, Choco, offered to give any of us a $20 discount if you use a special code in registering.  Here is what he said: "I can give a $20 discount off the Full Pass VIP Package of the NYSalsa Congress when you put in the code: "Danceintime" in the Code Box at the link below:

Registration Page.   So check out this deal if you want to attend the NY Congress!  It would be lovely for some of our friends to come to these events and cheer us on, as well as enjoy the workshops and open dancing!

5.  Need a special dance outfit/costume made?

If you are looking to have a someone sew a costume or special outfit to dance in, you might want to contact an excellent fashion designer who also dances named Christina at: lypsynka@yahoo.com.  She has made costumes for the DIT women's team that have jewelry on them, and each lady is in the identical bottoms and a unique top.  We wore these costumes in Puerto Rico and you can see them in photos on the website. Christina is very knowledgeable in all matters of costume design and creation, and flexible and helpful.  I highly recommend her services if you are looking for help of this kind!

6.  Hispanic Heritage Programs/Team Building Programs/Latin Dance Class or Entertainment

If you know of any organization (workplace, church/synagogue, club, etc) or someone planning an event (bar/bat mitzvah, wedding, birthday party, etc) that is looking for Latin Dance entertainment or instruction, please feel free to contact me or pass along my information to the person making plans.  Danceintime does private performances, lessons for special events and groups, and also runs Hispanic Heritage Month programs (that month runs from 9/15 to 10/15) and team building programs aimed at workplaces, organizations, and schools.  Thanks!!

7.  Dance Humor/Human Interest

Check out this inspiring video with the same dance sequence repeated in countless countries of the world by all the peoples of the world. I think it's beautiful.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&eurl=http://www.wherethehellismatt.com/?fbid=45iPb   And if you like that video, check the outtakes--some are really funny:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT8jA_pps3o&feature=user.

And here is yet another dance-related video worth watching that a friend recently sent me. It's hilarious:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg&NR=1

8.  Need Advice on a Stage for Rent

I have a friend, Tania Nunez, in a top flight ballroom performing group, and she is looking for a stage where her ballroom team could do a show.  They want something with seats in any formation around the stage and a reasonable rental price.  It could be anything from a theater to a church that has a stage area, to a school auditorium, etc.  If you know of a venue that isn't too pricey to rent where a show could be done, let me know and I'll pass along the info to her.  Thanks!
